As a journalist for more than forty years, Terri Thompson sought to bring truth to light through the written word. Now, as an emerging visual artist, Terri is on an "art journey," seeking to observe and expose truth through her photography, watercolors and acrylic paintings.
“The aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance.” -- Aristotle
“Art isn’t a result, it’s a journey. The challenge of our time is to find a journey worthy of your heart and your soul.” -- Seth Godin
“Art is the journey of a free soul.” -- Alev Oguz
Terri Thompson has been on a personal artistic journey for most of her adult life, starting out as a graphic artist and photographer for a weekly newspaper in Iowa. As time passed and she allowed herself to wonder and wander, her artistic adventure led her to different forms of visual art, most recently watercolor and acrylic painting. Her styles have evolved from the realism of photography to impressionism and even abstract expressionism.
Follow Terri as she continues on her art journey and builds her portfolio of photographs and paintings. She’ll be writing a blog, describing the trials and triumphs of an emerging artist, that you may follow here. Some of her work will be on exhibit at the Las Vegas Artists’ Guild and available for purchase from Fine Art America.
“Art is more than just a practice or skill; it’s a way of life and a passion. Art is more than just an image; each piece tells a story.” -- Terri Thompson
Photography
Terri began her venture into photography as a photojournalist shooting black-and-white pictures for a weekly newspaper with a 35 mm SLR Nikon camera. Today she shoots digitally in color with her iPhone camera. Nothing tells a story better than a photograph. But is it art? “I should say so!” says Terri. Most of Terri’s photos are taken outdoors, capturing the beauty of nature.
Impressionist Art
Often using her photographs as a reference, Terri employs watercolors and acrylics to paint in an impressionistic style. Through careful composition, design and use of tone, she captures the extraordinary light that transforms a subject or landscape, recreating nature’s beauty.
Abstract Expressionist Art
Another way of visualizing truth or telling a story is through the use of vibrant, somewhat distorted colors. In her abstract paintings of flowers, fruit and even landscapes, Terri presents the common in an uncommon way.

Meet the Artist
Thank you for visiting my website; I'm delighted that you've stopped by. I'm coming to you from my studio in sunny Las Vegas, Nevada. If you and I have been friends for very long, you may be surprised to see me here. After all, for most of my life I was a journalist or taught business journalism at Columbia University in New York City, where most recently I was director of the prestigious Knight-Bagehot Fellowship in Economics and Business Journalism. When I retired from Columbia in 2018, I began to repurpose myself as a "visual artist," and moved with my husband to Las Vegas, where the gorgeous sunlight makes it the perfect place to learn and practice my new calling as a watercolorist and acrylic painter, and to fulfill my dream of becoming a viable artist. And I think I've begun to see some improvement already. A few friends have asked if I would be willing to sell some of my pieces, and someone even asked if I would teach a painting class. So, as I continue my journey as an emerging artist, would you like to join me? I plan to write a weekly blog, describing my trials and my triumphs, my struggles and setbacks, and, of course my progress. I hope that within just a few months, I will be able to exhibit some of my work in the gallery of the Las Vegas Artists' Guild in the Galleria Mall here in Las Vegas, and perhaps sell a few items through Fine Art America. In the meantime, please sign up to receive my blog posts and follow me on Facebook and Instagram. I look forward to sharing my story with you and I hope it inspires you to follow your dreams, whatever they may be.
